30 Poems in 30 Days: Day Fifteen Prompt

“Beautiful is the chance encounter, on an operating table, of a sewing machine and an umbrella.”
– Comte De Lautreamont
Write down 6 images that stand out in your mind from the past few days.

Images, like words, have denotative meanings as well as connotative meanings: the literal meaning and also the cultural and experiential associations that depend on the context of the image and the viewer’s life.

For example, you can look at a photo of a segregated bus in New Orleans and see the representation of a bus and passengers.  But if you knew the photo was taken just months after Brown v. Board of Education ruled against segregation and months before Rosa Parks refused to go to the back of the bus, the photo would take on an altered meaning and value to you.

Look back at the images you wrote down – do any of them have a context or a connotative meaning that now alters the meaning to the image to you? Choose one to write about. What gives it meaning?  The time, place, context, any historical connections? Associations you have with it from your past, your family, your experience, your education, your upbringing? Write and discover.
